Creating Calm, One Candle at a Time

"Would I be happy burning this in Chester's home?"

It's a simple question, but it's the one that guides every candle I make.

Chester, my Toy Cockapoo, has always been more than just my dog, he's my inspiration. Like many dog owners, I loved filling my home with beautifully scented candles. One evening, while Chester was curled up beside me, I found myself wondering if the candles I was burning had ever been designed with dogs in mind.

The more I researched, the more I realised there wasn't a straightforward answer. I discovered that not all candles are created equal. The type of wax, the fragrance ingredients and even the wick can all vary from one candle to another. Dogs experience the world through their incredible sense of smell, so I wanted to understand more about the products we use in our homes and how to make thoughtful choices around our pets. That one question changed everything.

The more I researched, the more surprised I became. I learnt that some ingredients commonly found in home fragrance products may not be suitable for every household, particularly where pets are concerned. Certain essential oils can be harmful to dogs if used incorrectly, and because every dog is different, I believe it's worth taking the time to understand what we're bringing into our homes. That discovery completely changed the way I looked at candles.

I didn't rush into making candles. I spent many months researching, learning and testing before I ever poured my first one. What started as curiosity quickly became a passion for learning. I spent countless hours researching ingredients, reading about essential oils, understanding different waxes and testing combinations until I felt confident enough to create something of my own. Today, every Little Paws candle still begins with that same question: "Would I be happy burning this in Chester's home?"

More than just making candles

People often imagine candle making as simply melting wax and pouring it into a tin. If only it were that easy! One of my favourite parts of running Little Paws is creating a brand-new seasonal scent. This is where my kitchen starts to look more like a science experiment.

Out come all my carefully selected dog-friendly essential oils, along with a collection of little egg cups that I use for blending. I'll spend hours adding a drop here, taking one away there, trying to capture not just a fragrance, but the feeling of a season.What does spring smell like? How can I bottle the warmth of a summer evening? What fragrance reminds people of crisp autumn walks with their dog?

Sometimes the scent comes first and the name follows naturally. Other times, I'll think of the perfect name long before I've created the blend to match it. It's my favourite part of the whole process because that's the moment each candle begins to tell its own story.

Patience is part of the process

Once I've created a blend I'm happy with, the real work begins. Each candle is hand-poured in small batches using natural soy wax and a carefully chosen paper and cotton wick. Then... I wait. For twelve days the candle cures before I light it for the very first time. The waiting isn't always easy, especially when I'm excited about a new seasonal collection, but it's an essential part of creating a quality candle.

That first burn tells me everything I need to know. Does the wick burn cleanly? Is the flame the right size? How well does the fragrance fill the room? Does the scent feel calming without becoming overpowering? 

Only if it passes every test does it become part of the Little Paws collection. Then comes another one of my favourite jobs, designing the label to reflect the scent, the season and the story behind the candle.

Choosing every ingredient with care

Every decision I make is intentional. I use natural soy wax because it burns cleanly and is a renewable resource.

When I'm creating a new blend, I don't simply ask, "Does this smell lovely?" I also research each essential oil to understand its traditional properties, why it's commonly used and whether it's one I feel comfortable using in a home shared with dogs. Only then do I begin blending fragrances inspired by the changing seasons.  The wick is made from natural cotton and paper, helping to provide a clean, even burn with minimal soot when cared for correctly."

I also love using amber glass jars for many of my candles. As well as looking timeless and elegant, amber glass helps protect the natural ingredients from light, preserving the quality of the essential oils inside. The coloured glass also softens the appearance of the flame, creating a warm, gentle glow.

For my signature tins, sustainability is just as important. They're fully recyclable, but I always encourage customers to give them a second life. Mine now hold earrings, paperclips and the odd hair grip that would otherwise disappear forever!

It's amazing how many customers tell me they've turned theirs into storage for treats, sewing kits or little keepsakes.

Education has become part of my business

The biggest surprise since starting Little Paws hasn't been learning how to make candles. It's been discovering how many dog owners simply don't know what questions to ask. At markets and events, people often stop because they like the look of my candles. They leave talking about ingredients, candle care, creating calmer homes and making informed choices for the pets they love. Those conversations are my favourite part of every event. If someone walks away having learnt something new, even if they don't buy a candle, I feel I've achieved what I set out to do.

Inspired by one very special Cockapoo

Everything I do comes back to Chester. He'll never know that one simple question changed my life. Because of him, I've built a business that combines two things I love: creating beautiful candles and helping dog owners feel more confident about the choices they make in their homes. Every new scent, every seasonal collection and every hand-poured candle begins with the same goal, to create something I'd be proud to use in my own home. For me, creating a candle has never been just about fragrance. It's about creating a home where both people and their four-legged companions can relax together.

My hope isn't that every reader rushes out to buy one of my candles. My hope is that the next time someone lights a candle in a home shared with a dog, they'll pause for a moment and ask themselves the same question that inspired Little Paws:

"Would I be happy burning this in Chester's home?"
