identibase Introduces New Awareness Day

Did you know that lost pets with microchips are 6x more likely to be reunited with their families compared to non-microchipped pets?

Reunions start with a microchip. This National Pets Reunited Day (4th February), make sure your pet is microchipped, registered correctly, and those details are kept up to date in case the unthinkable happens. When a pet goes missing, time is critical. Clear, permanent identification significantly improves the chances of a swift reunion.

Microchipping became a legal requirement as of 6 April 2016 for dogs, and 10 June 2024 for cats in England. Despite this, three out of five (65%) stray cats brought into Woodgreen’s Godmanchester centre over the past 12 months were not microchipped (Woodgreen Pets Charity: June 2025). These pets are less likely to be reclaimed, with only 7% of stray cats being reunited with their owners at Woodgreen in the past 12 months. Reasons include cats having either no microchip or incorrect details linked to the chip, meaning there’s no way to contact owners to let them know their beloved pet is safe.

To help you make sure you’ve done everything you can to keep your pet safe, we’ve pulled together this useful guide. In this guide, we cover how to prevent your pet from going missing, what to do if it happens, and the essential tools every pet keeper should have. You can also find information about what to do if you find a stray pet on the Woodgreen website.
