Triple Victory at the Finals

Prison Officer Charlie, 38, has achieved a remarkable triple victory at the recent HMPPS Dog Trial Finals, winning all three disciplines with his working partner Eric, a black Labrador.

Finding a Calling in Dog Handling

Charlie, who joined the Prison Service in 2018, initially worked in security at HMP Pentonville. However, after observing prison dog handlers in action, he knew he had found his calling. "I saw the dog handlers and thought working with dogs is the best job," Charlie explained. He was then able to apply for his dream role and began training with dogs right away.

Meeting Eric and Entering the Trials

Charlie met Eric, a black Labrador, and their bond was instant. They developed a strong partnership, and with the support of Charlie’s team, he was encouraged to enter the HMPPS Dog Trials – a prestigious event where dogs working across the prison estate, alongside their handlers, compete to be crowned top dog.

The Finals: Three Disciplines Mastered

"I entered the dog trials not thinking much of it, but found myself getting through each stage with Eric, and then we were invited to the finals," Charlie said. "I was more nervous than Eric, but Eric was incredible." Ultimately the pair excelled in all three challenging disciplines for passive dogs including operational search, scent recognition and search.

Working Dogs Across the Prison Estate

There are hundreds of dogs working across UK prisons. The four-legged heroes not only live with their handlers but are their dedicated partners at work too. Eric and Alice are trained to sniff out illegal items and substances, and general purpose dogs will de-escalate tense situations, prison dogs work alongside their human colleagues to keep prisons safe and secure.

Eric and Alice: Two Personalities, One Mission

Charlie describes Eric as "so soft and placid, a real daddy's boy, and the only Labrador who is picky about his food”. Charlie also works with Alice, an active dog and a Cocker Spaniel whose energy he describes as the opposite, "like a firework going off in her head". Quite the contrast to Eric's calm demeanour. Both live with Charlie which makes for never a dull moment.

Why the Bond Matters

The success highlights the diverse and rewarding career paths available within HMPPS. For Charlie, the role represents the perfect combination of professional challenge and personal fulfilment. "To be a good dog handler, the bond is the crucial part," he emphasises. "It is genuinely the best job and it is so rewarding."

Careers and Progression in HMPPS

HMPPS offers numerous specialist roles beyond traditional prison officer positions, including dog handling, which plays a vital role in maintaining security and safety across the prison estate. These positions provide opportunities for career progression and the chance to develop specialist skills whilst making a meaningful contribution to public safety.
